How can mapping the past help protect the future? Biologist Will Nelson uses visual mapping to help BC's Metlakatla Nation near Prince Rupert identify intertidal archeological sites before they disappear under rising seas. They fly over the shoreline, photographing clam gardens (a form of First Nations mariculture where they modified the beach to create a habitat for clams), canoe runs, and stone alignments. Identifying these archeological sites may help them establish long-standing claims to the land and protect sensitive coastal areas from development.
