When the United States invaded British North America, the Mohawks fought to avenge the loss of their homeland south of the Great Lakes. Through courage and tactical ingenuity, the Mohawks turn the tide of the war, and ended the last American invasion of the north and saving Canada's future. The Covenant Chain affirmed the Mohawk Nation/Anglo-American alliance. During the American Revolutionary War, Mohawk chief Tyendinega and his people backed the British; but when they lost the war, the Haudenosaunee nations were exiled to the Bay of Quinte and the Grand River areas - the Iroquois Confederacy reborn in a new land. Politically astute Tyendinega created the Western Confederacy hoping to block American western expansion. Later, Shawnee Chief Tecumseh recruited eastern nations warriors in 1810. British troops were at war with France when American soldiers invaded British colonies to their north.  Indigenous warriors led by Mohawk adoptee, John Norton, were key in defeating the Americans in the War of 1812.  Learning our true history is an important part of reconciliation; the Mohawk demonstrated the power of working together and helped to make Canada a possibility.
