A virus enters a host cell by attaching to proteins on its surface. The lytic and lysogenic cycles are the ways viruses exploit a host cell on which they depend for replication. For example, in the lytic cycle the fully formed herpes simplex virus bursts cells and are seen as a cold sore. DNA viruses can lie dormant within cells in the lysogenic cycle until a trigger switches on some of the viral sequence's genes.
