Coming-of-age stories chart a character's journey from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood. This genre is also known by the German word, 'Bildungsroman'. Novels written in this genre usually focus on one central character, as they face challenges or go through a life-changing event, reaching maturity by the end of the story. Examples include Charles Dickens's "Great Expectations", J.D Sallinger's "The Catcher in the Rye", Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird", and "The Hunger Games" trilogy by Suzanne Collins. This genre brings to light the universal experience of growing up.
