The Heiltshuk Big House was once a dream that the ancestors and elders of Bella Bella had envisioned, and it is now becoming a reality. It is the cornerstone of their culture, and it will host many different ceremonies for the community. When potlaches were banned, women carried the knowledge, the dances and the songs underground and when the ban was removed, they retaught the traditions to new generations. There has been no Big House since the late 19th century, so this new structure with its traditional earthen floor will create a legacy for future generations, carrying forward the traditional ways.
