Heinrich Heine (1797-1856): He was as controversial as the time he lived in. Some considered him to be a poet of revolution and a friend of Marx’s, for others he was a snob, cynic, and nihilist. He was the most renowned German writer of his time and an immigrant accused of defilement of his motherland. His biography in the collection The Great Germans starts with the words, “To speak about Heinrich Heine today means to search for the unknown.”.
