Adventure stories take readers on extraordinary journeys across time and space, full of danger, excitement, and triumph. A courageous central character must solve a problem, encountering obstacles along the way. Homer's ancient Greek tale 'The Odyssey', and the Anglo-Saxon poem 'Beowulf' are early examples. Dumas' novel 'The Count of Monte Cristo', Melville's 'Moby Dick', and Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island' thrilled readers centuries later. The genre went on to include works based on true events, such as ' Misty of Chincoteague' by Marguerite Henry, Paulsen's survival novel 'Hatchet', and 'Lost Moon', co-written by astronaut Jim Lovell. Readers continue to be inspired and entertained by adventure stories in many forms.
