Young animals face many challenges before they come of age. A young puku antelope narrowly escapes being captured by a crocodile as she crosses a river to get to her mom. Adolescent lions learn skills through play-fighting and hippo baiting, but still rely on their mothers and aunts for food. Yearling giraffes travel in family herds, learning foraging skills. Young hippos learn to defend their territory in the pod, and males from two related elephant herds greet each other along the river bank, but they need an older male mentor to teach them critical skills. Young male giraffes hone skills by sparring, an adolescent hornbill learns how to hunt frogs and a young kingfisher practices her dive. A bateleur eagle brings home paltry food scraps hoping to encourage her adolescent to finally fledge and start hunting for herself. A lone young lion struggles to protect his first kill from the ruling males in the territory. Female puku antelopes watch young males practice territorial battle skills as they lock horns and wrestle. Male elephants don't usually breed until they're over 30, so they have many years to learn from an older mentor in a bachelor herd. There are many hurdles along the way, but every lesson learned helps each animal survive in adulthood.
