In 2017, Indigenous people from across Canada gathered in Winnipeg to learn about a unique opportunity to protect their ancestral lands for cultural heritage, sustenance and conservation values. The Indigenous Circle of Experts is part of the Pathway to Canada Target 1 process. Target 1 is Canada's commitment under the United Nations convention on Biodiversity to protect 17% of the land and inland waters by 2020.
