This episode follows the seasonal eb and flow of the Mekong through Cambodia - a nation where everything has a special relationship with water. From Cambodia's diverse wildlife to people living in the stilt villages of Lake Tonle Sap, the Mekong has dictated the lives of everything that lives there for centuries. We start at the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat - the 7th wonder of the world and the focal point of a civilization built around one critical resource: water. It's the dry season and the temperature is scorching. Squabbling vultures descend on a carcass, finding order in the chaos so they all have their fair share. Unaware of the vital role they play in maintaining a healthy disease free ecosystem, they gorge themselves till they can barely fly. There are some creatures that find different ways to manage life in the dry season. Flying foxes are spectacular bats that live in the forest canopy. More resembling a primate than a bat, their ever-changing seasonal diet allows them to thrive throughout the year. Where many creatures wait for the abundance of food that the wet season brings, these wonderful animals already have hungry mouths to feed. The pups keep their mothers busy. As the dry season continues we witness the plight of an oriental Pratincole as the fields around it go up in flames - fires are a harsh reality of this time of year. The month of May brings the wet season and renewed life to Cambodia. Lake Tonle Sap starts to fill and the lives of the people living in the stilt villages transforms. The surrounding forest are submerged - perfect breeding grounds for the countless fish species arriving. The flood plains around Tonle sap are also breeding grounds for the endangered Sarus crane. The Mekong River is the life force that flows through this land.
