The Panama Canal is a vital trade route linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The idea originated in the 1500's in Spain, but it was the French who made the first try in 1881. Malaria decimated the work force and construction ended after 8 years. When Panama won its independence, construction was restarted by the United States, and the canal was opened in 1905, one of the greatest engineering feats of all time.
