In many countries the vulnerable and elusive ocelot is on the endangered species List. But on the southern edge of the Pantanal, one of the world's largest tropical wetlands, this magnificent wild cat seems to be making a comeback. A team of young wildlife scientists is trying to understand why. At the end of the dry season, food is scarce, but the annual wet season brings new sources.The powerful night vision of the territorial ocelots helps them snatch passing prey, mostly small rodents. Researchers gather information to help protect ocelots in agricultural rice areas, studying the changes in their diet, their adaptive behaviour and impacts of these changes. The balance between agriculture and conservation needs more study.
