Sundance Harvest, an urban farm near Downsview Park, Toronto, was created by Cheyenne Sundance - a 24 year-old self-taught farmer. With her small team of farmers including Maya, Rosie and others, Sundance Harvest offers seasonal CSAs and innovative products, like a "u-pick" flower farm for subscribers. Cheyenne is passionate about equity in agriculture. Following in the tradition of countless Black women like civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, Sundance prioritizes putting agency back into the hands of the most marginalized and providing them the necessary tools to feed themselves. Cheyenne founded Growing in the Margins, a non-profit program for Black, Indigenous and Persons of Colour (BIPOC) youth who are interested in careers in agriculture. She also strongly advocates for fair wages and started the first BIPOC Farmers Caucus with the National Farmer Union. Here's a line from the video: "You want more young farmers.. and you want more young farmers of all races, all ethnicities, all creeds, all nations.. and the way to do that is to make sure that everyone feels supported and there's a space for everyone to grow and learn. We noticed that there was no space for BIPOC farmers that were serious about learning to farm, so we started Sundance Harvest." - Cheyenne, Farm Director We spent the day at the greenhouse chatting with Cheyenne, Maya and Rosie and were taken aback by their knowledge, drive and fun working atmosphere.
