The beaches of the Hawaiian islands are legendary - white, yellow, black, green and red exotic sands - and they're among the most welcoming in the world. Throughout the Hawaiian Islands, natural forces of creation & destruction can be observed in real-time as they work to shape the living beach. In a very literal way, these beaches are forged inside active volcanoes: every bit of land exists here because of these red-hot furnaces, and every year, molten landmass is being added to the Hawaiian coasts. But these beaches are also buffeted by some of the most powerful waves known to man - waves that can claw away these new beaches, while also offering some of the biggest, riskiest surfing on the planet. Though Hawaii possesses legendarily lush environments, it also has more endangered species, and has lost more native species, than anywhere else in North America. These remotest of archipelagoes then function as a beach laboratory for how life might succeed or fail, when left in isolation. In Hawaii, we watch as living beaches "begin".
