Martin Luther King Jr, an influential activist, led the Civil Rights Movement to fight for the rights of African Americans through the 1950s and 60s. He believed in non-violent protest and his work helped to tear down racial segregation and inspire generations of activists seeking Civil Rights and a more equal society. When Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955, Martin led a long boycott of the city's busses. By 1957 he was the foremost spokesperson for African American rights and was arrested in 1960 for taking part in a protest. He became famous for his letter from the Birmingham jail and his "I Have a Dream" speech. The Civil Rights Act become law in 1964 and Martin was awarded the Nobel Peace Price. In 1968 he was fatally shot by an assassin.
