For many years the message has been clear that illicit drugs obtained on the street are often dangerous. What many teens may not realize, though, is that drugs purchased in a pharmacy or prescribed by a physician can also be dangerous. These over-the-counter and prescription drugs are generally beneficial when used as directed. Some, such as cough syrup and painkillers, have potential for abuse when taken in large doses or used by those who don't need them to treat a medical issue. These include depressants, stimulants, and other types of drugs that can severely impair one's judgement when abused and at times even lead to death. Even though these drugs can be obtained legitimately they are no less risky than street drugs when used improperly.
