How do distance-time and speed-time graphs work? The gradient and shape of the line on a distance-time graph shows an object's speed, and whether the speed is constant, accelerating, decelerating, or stopped. On the speed-time graph, the line is always horizontal, and the height shows the object's speed. Neither shows velocity (speed in a specified direction) which can be forward or backward motion. Speed is distance divided by time.
