This film charts the early dry season, from July to September, a time when falling leaves transform woodlands into a golden wonderland and lagoons metamorphose from a green paradise into a muddy hell in Zambia's Luangwa Valley.  While miniature predators prey on ants in the undergrowth, a bachelor hippo is forced to leave his peaceful waterhole as it claims the life of a desperate buffalo.
