On December 6, 1921, Agnes Macphail became the first woman elected to the House of Commons in the first campaign that allowed women to run. Never afraid to speak her mind, Macphail championed the rights of women, immigrants, prisoners and other marginalized groups despite critics who accused her of communism and attributed her views to her "womanly nature".
