The story of Romulus and Remus, the twin brothers who allegedly founded Rome, is one of the most famous in Roman mythology. A servant rescued them from the King's threat of death by floating them in a basket on the River Tiber. After being raised by a she-wolf and some shepherds, Remus was captured by the king in a chance encounter. Romulus killed the King in retaliation, and in about 750 BCE the twins founded the city which today spreads across seven hills.
