Harriet Tubman was the first American woman to organize a military operation. She was born into slavery, but managed to gain her freedom while risking her life. In the American Civil War, she worked as a cook, a nurse, a spy, and a scout. In 1863, she organized an operation with the goal of freeing people in slavery, and burnt down many plantations. This freed more than 700 people.
