The overuse of fossil fuels along with over-fishing and coastal development have combined to have a devastating effect on Florida's fragile coral reef, the third largest barrier reef in the world. To provide a safe habitat for the amazing array of fish and other wildlife, and offer reef-building coral a chance to flourish, officials maintain an interconnected series of protected habitats that together make up the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
