They are Europe's biggest terrestrial mammals and the last wild bovine species on the continent. Once the European bison, also known as Wisent, roamed most of the old world, but, unlike its close relative on the other side of the Atlantic, it was hunted to complete extinction by the early 20th century. Only by ambitious rewilding undertakings is it nowadays possible to see these fascinating animals in their natural habitats again.
