The final country on the Mekong's journey is the home of the rivers mighty delta. A large deposit of rich nutrients carried downstream from hundreds of kilometres makes this region, the jewel of Vietnam's crown, a biological treasure trove. This dense maze of mangroves, winding waterways provide a multitude of habitats. The delta is bustling with life. One primate uses this area to it's advantage. Cunning macaques perfectly position themselves in mangrove trees hanging over the delta's many channels. To their delight the river's flow has brought a bounty of treats and a huge troop of males, females and their babies are leaping in to the water. These macaques are competent swimmers and with swimming being the easiest way to get around they stuff their cheek pouches to the brim so they can gobble up as much as possible. Twice a day water rushes in and out of these mangrove channels, the tide brings an important food source for many, but it's when it recedes, that a strange world emerges. Out of little holes in the mud flamboyant fish with bulbous eyes appear. Mudskippers are amphibious fish, and spend many hours a day out of water. Their limb-like pectoral fins allow them to crawl and skip on the mud sifting through the sediment they suck up any small creatures and plants. Although they might look clumsy, but they're surprisingly agile ready to leap into their flaring their dorsal fin should anything cross it's territory. Further afield the Mekong provides habitats far beyond it's reach. As the river swells into the Vast expanses of lush wetlands this triggers a population explosion of insects and other invertebrates. Thousands of birds flock to the delta wetlands to take advantage of the endless supply of food. This marks breeding season for most birds and a Jacana pheasant chick and it's oversized feet takes it's first awkward steps in this mysterious floating water world.
