She was known as the Reindeer Queen - and one of the richest women in Alaska. Daughter of a Russian trader father and an Inupiaq mother, she and her Inupiat husband became the first Indigenous Alaskans to own a reindeer herd, which became hers when he died. She used her wealth to provide food and shelter for the Inupiat community and taught her adopted children how to care for the reindeer and follow the Inupiat traditions.
