Ancient Greek society made up of diverse peoples. The ancient Greeks identified by the city where they were born; they attributed differences of skin colour and physique to human adaptation to different environments. Slavery was widespread and an exercise in power, not based on skin colour. Metics, free people who came to from non-Greek places, did not have the right to become citizens, creating imbalances in Athenian society.
