Canada was instrumental in bringing bison back from the brink of extinction. The Canadian government purchased the Pablo-Allard bison herd in Montana and their round-up was an event recorded in newspaper stories and archival photographs. The herd was shipped by rail to Banff National Park and to Elk Park near Edmonton where they became a tourist attraction. Some were then moved to Buffalo National Park, AB, built specifically as a conservation area for bison. When the population increased exponentially, and over-grazing and disease became a problem some of the herd was moved to Wood Buffalo National Park. Conservationists learned from early mistakes, and today conservation areas are designed to protect full eco-systems, not just one species. Featuring: Harvey Locke, Lauren Markiewicz and Jennifer Brower.
