In 1832, German prince Maximilian of Wied and Swiss painter Karl Bodmer sailed from Holland to America. They explored the land of the Indigenous Peoples, spending much of their time in the Great Plains, and wherever they went Bodmer sketched and painted the chiefs, medicine men, dancers, and warriors. Accompanied by short text passages, Bodmer's colorful, mostly full-page paintings show chiefs in full regalia, scenes from village life, and a battle of the Blackfeet against the Cree and Assiniboine.
