Autobiography of a North American Ojibway who was taken from his family in 1939 at the age of ten and placed in a Jesuit boarding school in Northern Ontario. The school was intended to educate and assimilate Basil Johnston and his fellow Indian classmates but the boys learned instead to create a subculture of survival that helped them copy with this alien setting.
