Peter Benenson was outraged when he learned Portuguese students who publicly hailed freedom while living under a dictatorship had been imprisoned. He began an "Appeal of Amenesty" to get the students released. This appeal turned into Amensty International an organization that fights to free people who have been imprisoned by oppressive governments.
