Following a battle off the Ionian Islands, Captain Jack Aubrey and Dr. Stephen Maturin are in Malta, where both of Aubrey's ships, the "Worcester" and the "Surprise", are undergoing repairs. While Aubrey concerns himself with the reconditioning work, Maturin, surgeon and spy, learns that agents of Napoleon are planning to sabotage Aubrey's next mission.
