Mercy lives with her mother, who is retreating into depression, and her aunt who reads tarot cards. She also lives with the fear of the return of her aunt's boyfriend. She tries to cope with these problems and her new school and her job. Mercy thinks that she doesn't need friends but she finds them as well as help from an unexpected source.
