A number of beliefs about student writing underlie this document. The beliefs have relevance to the programming of writing in the classroom and to the decisions and approaches teachers make. They have relevance to the quality of engagement, craft, proficiency, and authenticity of student writing. We hope that each reader will relate these stated beliefs to their own beliefs and practice, and think about how, as teachers, we can engage and provide opportunities for our students to write well, authentically, and with purpose. .
