The primary purpose of school self assessment is school improvement. What is critical, however, is that schools shape their school assessment and improvement process in a way that makes sense for them. School leaders, along with their teachers and support staff, need to see school self-evaluation as a series of positive steps that lead to a successful school community. As you work through this book, you will prepare a clear, evidence-based assessment of your school. This assessment will contain all the important contexts, processes, and results that describe your school community. The assessment model developed in this book is divided into four sections: School Characteristics (Who We Are) Key Education Processes and Activities (What We Do) Assessing School Achievement (What We Accomplish) School Improvement Plans (Our Next Steps). For school assessment to be successful, it needs to be a systematic, regular process whose practices are shared by everyone in the community. As well, the improvement plans it develops must be rational, transparent, and always evidence-based. School Self-Assessment: The Road to School Effectiveness is the product of a partnership between the Ontario Principals' Council (OPC) and the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) in the United Kingdom. .
