Nitta Sayuri's story begins in 1929 when she is taken from her home and apprenticed to a renowned geisha house. In the decadent heart of Kyoto, Sayuri must learn the arts of dancing, music and beguiling powerful men, at whatever cost. But as WW II erupts and the geisha houses are closed, she struggles to make a new life.
