This 2nd movement fills the role of scherzo in Mahler's first and most popular symphony. It is in the style of a Lñdler, an Austrian folk dance, with the opening cello/bass motive actually taken from the folk song Hans und Grete. The music evokes foot-stomping and rustic good times.
