The Rideau Canal: Shortly after the War of 1812, the British commissioned a the Rideau Canal be built as a way to help defend invasions into Canada. It was to be used by the military as a secure route for transporting supplies and information between Montreal and the British Naval base in Kingston, Ontario. After the canal was opened, its primary purpose became a transportation route for goods and for linking communities. Fort Henry: After the War of 1812 and the building of the Rideau Canal, the British built Fort Henry to protect Kingston Harbour and the entrance to the canal, and Martello towers to protect Kingston itself. Today, re-enactors portray what life was like during the early 1800s in Canada.
