In the 19th century, the US government forced the Navajo nation onto a small reservation and demanded they abandon their native language for English. But the Navajo secretly kept their language alive, and in World War II, the US Marine Corps recruited young Navajo men to transmit military messages in Navajo code. Their ingenious and complex code saved thousands of American lives in key battles fought in the Pacific. For decades they were sworn to secrecy.
