Britain and France declare war on Germany as Denmark, Norway, Belgium, and the Netherlands fall to the Nazi invaders. At Dunkirk, French and British troops are dramatically and miraculously rescued. In June 1940, Paris falls to Germany and France surrenders. In August, the German Luftwaffe launches massive nightly bombings of Britain. In September, Japan becomes the third member of the Axis. America remains isolationist but enacts the first peacetime draft in its history.
