As Germany is bogged down by the Russian winter, America fears a west coast invasion by Japan. American citizens of Japanese ancestry, as well as Japanese aliens, are sent to detention camps. With tremendous losses of men and material, the US and its allies begin to turn the tide. On the European front, the 444th, a division of Japanese-Americans, becomes the war's most decorated unit. Black soldiers fight shoulder to shoulder with white soldiers in the Battle of the Bulge, the first step toward integrating the armed forces. The liberation of German concentration camps reveals the full horror of the Holocaust. The war ends and the Atomic Age begins with the dropping of A-bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The United States must help to rebuild a shattered world.
