GRASSLANDS - As you might expect, grasslands are biomes made primarily of grasses. Soil has a great effect on the plants and animals that can survive in a grassland biome. DESERT & TUNDRA - Although you may commonly think of deserts as being sandy, most are not. Far north of the desert biomes lies the arctic tundra biome. Even though the desert and the tundra are very far from each other, they are similar in that they both receive little precipitation. FORESTS - Forest biomes are large geographic regions dominated by trees. There are three major forest biomes: coniferous forests, temperate forests and tropical forest. WATER - The water biome is the largest biome on Earth. Most of the water is in the earth's oceans. Ocean biomes are referred to as marine biomes.
