This document was prepared by the Nova Scotia Department of Health Promotion and Protection (NSHPP), and is intended for use in the classroom in order to discourage alcohol, drug and tobacco usage, and gambling for 7-9 grade students. The supplement is based on the Social Influences Model of drug education. This model focuses on the adolescent use of substances as the result of influences from peers, the media, and general culture and their portrayal of substance abuse. These portrayals are messages that appear to condone the use, such as modelling of use, persuasive advertising, and/or direct offers by peers. The model in the supplement aims to create greater awareness of personal, social/interpersonal, and cultural/environmental spheres of influence and to develop skills to analyse and minimize their impact. Information for teachers includes separate learning plans, teacher slides, and student handouts for each grade level.--Includes text from document.
