In drought-ridden 1930s Saskatchewan eighteen year old Elena finds herself living alone in the small village of Trevna. Her mother has been dead for many years and her father disappeared. She has become an object of pity and fascination to her neighbours, but when a stranger shows up at a country dance Elena goes with him in his flashy roadster, leaving the town behind.
