On a cold December day in Minnesota, eleven-year-old Alvaro Garza fell through the ice that covered a river. Before rescue workers could find him and pull him from the icy water, forty minutes had elapsed, forty minutes in which he cold not breathe. This film examines how the human body tries to protect itself in extremely cold situation, and how Alvara survived with minimal brain damage.
