"'Fallen soldiers' are all too frequent in today's news, and from Linda's many school visits she knows that there is keen interest in this topic. She has used her extensive collection of archival material about Tombs of the Unknown Soldier from all around the world, to create this book. We start with photos of soldiers from various conflicts, then focus on Canada's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (the body brought back to Canada from France in 2000), proceeding to England's and France's Tombs/Memorials built in the early 1920s at Westminster Abbey and at the Arc de Triomphe, and the U.S. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. From there we continue around the world: Belgium, Poland, Russia, Greece, Italy, Japan, Iraq, Australia, New Zealand and so on. Supplementary material deals with tributes (poems, coins and medals, postcards in honour of fallen soldiers) and symbols (the poppy, torch/eternal flame, inverted rifle, laurel wreath and other symbols often seen on gravestones). Readers will be fascinated to read about two featured unknown soldiers, Canadian Herbert Peterson and U.S. unknown Michael Blassie, who have now been identified using DNA evidence."-- Provided by publisher.
