Mr. Stern was a quiet, solitary sort of chap whose head was always in the clouds because he liked to think. He worked just hard enough to get by, neither more nor less. He lived in a city that was neither big nor small, and in a house that was almost empty because he thought that he needed practically nothing. Maybe that is why this story is entitled Mr. Nothing.
