The digestive system involves ten organs that process the food we eat, retaining the nutrients and eliminating the wastes. It begins with the mouth, teeth, tongue and saliva which transform the food into an alimentary bolus which is swallowed. It passes through the esophagus to the stomach and the small intestine where it is decomposed by substances secreted by the liver and pancreas. The intestinal mucosa absorb the nutrients which pass into the blood while the wastes enter the large intestine and is evacuated. Digestion takes between twelve and twenty-four hours.
