This is the Enola Gay and it is carrying an atomic bomb. What began as a fine spring day in the Japanese city of Hiroshima in August 1945 became one of those history defining moments that changed the world. This devastating weapon led to the end of hostilities in World War 2 but also snuffed out the lives of more than 100,000 people in an instant. The city was laid waste, very few buildings survived; most were either vaporized, crushed or burnt to the ground during the ensuing firestorm.
