From deserts to oceans each environment has a typical flora adapted to its environmental conditions, climate and relief features. In dry environments, succulent plants maintain water reserves in succulent organs. Their leaves are small, often reduced to spines like cacti. Aquatic plants suffer from lack of air as they are partially or totally immersed in water. The water lily maintains air reserves in tissues called lacunae that help to supply oxygen and carbon dioxide. Flowering plants have been able to adapt and colonize the most inhospitable environments.
