Plant formation is a community of predominant plant species that determine a particular landscape. There are eight plant biomes on a planetary scale. The boreal forest in northern latitudes is made up of coniferous trees with some deciduous trees. The temperate forest at middle latitudes is dominated by deciduous trees that adapt to warm and cold seasons. Temperate prairie is an herbaceous zone with almost no trees where winter is dry. In coastal regions and around the Mediterranean Sea, evergreen shrubs adapted to summer time drought create the chaparral biome. On either side of the equator the tropical rainforest supports half of all living species while occupying only 7% land mass. On the savannah tall grasses and few trees are found. In the far north and at high altitudes, the tundra supports summer time low growing plants and bushes and few low growing trees. In the subtropical regions, little precipitation in the deserts support little vegetation.
